I rode the Ninja 650 R as a member of the motorcycling press at the World Launch in San Diego. We carved up some outstanding canyon roads and the 650 R was up to the task in every way. While the front end could use some adjustability for hard cornering, the ride quality overall is great. It has plenty of power from 3,000 to 10,000 RPM, without being overwhelming for a novice rider.
Ergonomics are excellent for shorter riders, with seating position upright and legroom to the pegs comfortable. Taller riders might be a bit cramped. Wind protection is good, but a taller shield would be welcomed. Front brakes are very good, with adjustable lever for reach. Clutch lever effort is light and shifts are smooth. Again, clutch lever is adjustable for reach.
The seat is a bit too firm, but comfortable in general.
Motor is free revving, and smooth all the way up to the redline. There are no self-canceling turn signals, which is annoying. Gas mileage is around 42MPG in hard riding.
Handling is light and easy, with the bars offering excellent leverage. Lean angles are generous. Tires grip well.
This is an excellent, fun bike for experienced riders and a good track day bike, while still being an excellent choice for novice riders.
