I traded in my 1994 1100 RS with 50,000 miles on a new 2004 1150 RT. I've had the bike less than a month and have ridden it just 3,000 miles. Last week-end I ran up the spine of California’s High Sierras then crossed the San Joaquin Valley to the Big Sur coast - enjoying the cool ocean breezes and winding coast road along Highway 1. Friday, Saturday and Sunday I ran just over 1500 miles.
From the blazing Mojave Dessert to the 10,000 foot Tioga Pass the bike ran flawlessly and exceeded my expectations for comfort and performance. I found 500 mile days to be relatively easy due to the adjustable windshield, aerodynamic fairing and a lack of the turbulent pounding I’d become accustom to on the 1100 RS. Riding solo but with complete camping gear I found the bike to have an excess of power - even at high altitude. Despite the heavy load - handling on the curving mountainous and coast roads was a pleasure. With the tall 6th gear I found myself cruising effortlessly in the triple digit ranges on the long desert straits and almost struggling to stay under 80 miles per hour.
The biggest problem I have with this bike is the high speed it is naturally ridden and today I received the first ticket I’ve had in over 5 years. See you in traffic school!
